Tonight, Oct. 4, incumbent Assemblywoman Joan Christensen will speak at Syracuse University at 7:30 p.m. in the Maxwell Auditorium. Campaign representatives have confirmed that Christensen will attend. Her opponent in the coming election, Charles Iavarone, was invited to debate but will not attend.
The event is open to the public; Christensen will state her views and members of the audience will have the chance to participate in a question-and-answer session. Public parking will be in the Irving and University Avenue garages.
The appearance is part of a series of Monday-night events in which candidates for Congress, the New York State Senate and State Assembly will visit SU. The political debates are sponsored by the Student Association, which initiated the program in the early 1990s to give students, faculty, staff and neighbors of SU the chance to hear from local candidates. Other debates on the schedule include:
Oct. 11 - Assemblyman William Magnarelli and challenger Robert Teachout
Oct. 18 - Assemblyman Jeff Brown and challenger Joe Rossi
Oct. 25 - Rep. James T. Walsh and challengers Howie Hawkins and Christina Rosetti
