In a show of unity with other members of the Central New York Community, the students, faculty and staff of the three major educational institutions on the University Hill-Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry-will march together Thursday from the SU Quad to Clinton Square to participate in the community-wide time of remembrance.
Leading the column of marchers will be the heads of the three institutions-Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw of SU; President Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., of SUNY Upstate; and President Cornelius B. Murphy Jr. of SUNY ESF-along with senior administrators and student leaders.
According to the march organizers, if even a small portion of the campus communities participate, the marchers will likely number in the thousands. Weather conditions will play a key factor in the final turnout; participants have been advised to bring umbrellas.
Marchers will gather in front of Hendricks Chapel on the SU Quad between 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. The Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel, will speak about the Clinton Square event, titled "We Stand Together: A Gathering of Hope and Healing," and Shaw, Eastwood and Murphy will make brief comments.
At 5:30 p.m., the marchers will file out of the Quad and proceed downtown, along Crouse Drive to South Crouse Avenue and then off the Hill to East Water Street. After a left onto East Water Street, they will walk westward to Clinton Square. Some members of the SUNY Upstate community will begin at the SU Quad, while others may join in along the march route on South Crouse Avenue.
At the conclusion of the Clinton Square event, marchers have been advised to gather at Hanover Square for the return trip to the Hill.
