Following is the latest information, as of Wednesday morning, Sept. 19, from Syracuse University of campus activities in response to Sept. 11's terrorism in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
University Community Invited to March From Quad to Clinton Square for Thursday Community Gathering
All Syracuse University students, faculty and staff who are available are invited to assemble on the Quad in front of Hendricks Chapel between 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, to join Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw and Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah A. Freund on a march from \the University Hill to Clinton Square to attend the community-wide time of remembrance.
All students, faculty and staff from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and SUNY Upstate Medical University are being invited to join their neighbors at SU in a show of solidarity with the Central New York community for an observance of those who died, those who remain missing, and those who are involved in rescue operations following the tragedies of Sept. 11.
Prior to departure from Hendricks Chapel at 5:30 p.m., the Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel, will speak about the Clinton Square event, titled "We Stand Together: A Gathering of Hope and Healing." Brief comments will also be made by Chancellor Shaw, SUNY ESF President Cornelius B. Murphy and a representative from SUNY Upstate.
Marchers are invited to bring candles or flashlights. Umbrellas are also recommended in case of inclement weather.
From the Quad, marchers will proceed along Crouse Drive to South Crouse Avenue and then off the hill to East Water Street. After a left onto East Water Street, they will walk westward to Clinton Square.
The event in Clinton Square is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine. Marchers will leave the Quad at 5:30 p.m. to allow enough time to walk to Clinton Square and get situated before the event begins. A very large crowd is expected to attend.
At Clinton Square, local fire, police and emergency medical personnel will honor their fallen comrades through a special processional. Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll and Onondaga County Executive Nicholas J. Pirro will give brief remarks, and clergy representing several religious movements will offer words of inspiration and prayer.
About a dozen musical selections will be performed by the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Grammy-nominated Native American singer Joanne Shenandoah, the Spirit of Syracuse Choir, the Syracuse Children's Chorus and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Gospel Choir, among others.
The event is scheduled to last about 60 to 90 minutes. Afterward, it is suggested that marchers gather at Hanover Square (East Water Street) for the return trip to the Hill.
Z89 Completes Successful Drive
On Tuesday afternoon, Z89 (WJPZ-FM) finished its collection of toiletries to send to rescue workers in New York City and Washington, D.C. More than 1,500 items were collected! The Z89 staff, the Office of Residence Life and the Salvation Army extend their thanks to all who contributed.
Teach-In Scheduled for Thursday Night
A teach-in about potential U.S. military actions in Afghanistan will be held in Grant Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.
Greeks Plan Saturday Car Wash at Manley
The Tri Delta sorority, with the aid of other Greek organizations on campus, is sponsoring a car wash from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in the traffic circle at Manley Field House. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.
Chancellor's Address Rescheduled for Oct. 2
A reminder: Chancellor Shaw's Address to the University Community has been rescheduled for Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.
