The College of Human Services and Health Professions (HSHP), in collaboration with the Office of Human Resources and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., is sponsoring free eye health screenings for all Syracuse University employees.

Screenings will take place:

  • Sept. 21, 8:30-11 a.m., in Rooms 304 B and C of the Schine Student Center;
  • Sept. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Kilian Room, Room 500 of the Hall of Languages; and
  • Sept. 23, 3:30-6:30 p.m., in Rooms 201 A and B of the Goldstein Student Center on South Campus.

No appointment is necessary for the five-minute checkup, which will include a visual field screening, 20/20 vision testing and a brief examination by an ophthalmologist. Participants will be advised of any suspected conditions for which they should visit their own ophthalmologists for complete examinations.

Luvenia Cowart, assistant dean of student affairs and special projects in HSHP,
says the eye screenings are an important health promotion tool. People leading busy lives, she says, often neglect their eye health and do not schedule regular appointments with an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in the care of the eyes. She hopes that the convenience of the screenings on campus will encourage employees to take advantage of the opportunity to be checked.

Cowart says the collaborative partnership grew from a previous community-campus partnership between HSHP and Pfizer. For more information about the free eye health screenings, call 443-4042.
