Following is the latest information, as of Friday afternoon, from Syracuse University of campus activities in response to Tuesday's terrorist incidents. This information supplements previous information packets.
EAP Reminds of Employee Help Services That are Available
SU's Employee Assistance Program encourages faculty and staff and their families to access EAP's counseling services as the need arises. EAP staff will respond quickly to all requests for counseling services during the workweek and will be on call over the weekend. As the initial trauma of this week's incidents subsided, it is normal for people to experience some strong emotional and physical reactions that can interfere with regular routines and work performance. EAP staff are available to assist in alleviating any added distress during this difficult time. Helpful information is now available on the EAP Web site, http://sumweb.hrm/eap. Hindu Student Association Prayer Time
In addition to the services and prayer opportunities announced earlier, the Hindu Student Association is holding a prayer time for the events of this week, from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Noble Room of Hendricks Chapel. All are invited.
Peace Gathering in Thornden Park

United Way September 11th Fund
On behalf of its contributors, United Way of Central New York will donate $25,000 to help victims of the terrorist attacks and their families. A special fund, the September 11th Fund, has been established through United Way of America and The Council on Foundations in collaboration with the United Way of New York City and the New York Trust Fund. The fund has been organized to respond to the pressing needs of the victims and their families, and all those affected by the tragedy. "We know how much our contributors want to help in this time of tragedy," says Mark Wagner, president of United Way of Central New York. "But this event is unlike any natural disaster. We wish the most pressing need was for food and blankets, but we know that the real need will be for traumatic stress and grief counseling. These needs will persist over many months and years. The local United Ways in New York City, Washington and Pittsburgh will be asked to provide extra services to meet these needs. Thankfully, United Ways support mental health services in these communities just as we do here in Central New York."
Those wishing to make a contribution to the September 11th Fund are asked to send their gifts to United Way of Central New York. Donations are being accepted by check made payable to United Way of CNY, P.O. Box 2129 Syracuse, NY 13220. Checks should be marked for "September 11th Fund." All funds collected in this effort will go to serve victims and their families.
Chancellor's Address Rescheduled for Oct. 2
Chancellor Shaw's Address to the University Community has been rescheduled for Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.
Student Orientation Class Canceled
The Student orientation class scheduled for September 20th has been canceled. Those scheduled to that class will automatically be given their second registration choice. Questions should be directed to Student Employment Services.
Women's Volleyball Now Canceled
The women's volleyball tournament at the University of New Hampshire, which was slated to include the Syracuse University Orangewomen, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, and Sunday, Sept. 16, has been canceled in the wake of Tuesday's tragedies. The Orangewomen are scheduled to take the court again on Wednesday, Sept. 19, against Buffalo in Manley Field House at 7 p.m.
Alibrandi Center Collecting Relief Funds at Weekend Masses
Mass is celebrated every weekday (with the exception of Tuesday) at noon in Hendricks Chapel, and the Alibrandi Catholic Center is available for private prayer and reflection. A special collection will be taken up at all weekend Masses at the Alibrandi Catholic Center. All the monies collected in this special collection will be donated to the search and rescue effort.
Maxwell Lecture for 4 p.m. Today Canceled
The State of Democracy lecture by Harvard Professor Orlando Patterson scheduled for 4 p.m. today in Maxwell Auditorium has been canceled.
Weekend Recreational Activities on Campus
UU Cinema is sponsoring three movies at Gifford Auditorium this weekend: "A Knight's Tale," Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., "The Mummy Returns," Friday and Saturday at 9:30 p.m., and "Army of Darkness," Friday and Saturday at midnight. "Late Night at the Gym" in Archbold and Flanagan Gymnasiums is Friday and Saturday, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday night activities include: Open Swim, Salsa Merengue Dancing, Kickboxing, a Foosball Tourney and access to the Fitness Center. Saturday night activities include: Water Polo, Yoga, Self Defense and access to the Fitness Center. "Late Night at the Gym" in the Women's Building is Friday and Saturday, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday night activities include: Indoor Soccer, Volleyball and Basketball. Saturday night activities include: Badminton, Cricket, Open Swim and Basketball. "Late Night at the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion" is Friday 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., the Rink Goes Techno! (disco-style lights and CDs spun by a WJPZ D.J.). The Alpha Phi Alpha Dance Party is Friday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium. Taiwanese Movie Night is Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Schine Room 228B. A sculpture dedication will take place Saturday at 4:30 p.m. between Huntington Beard Crouse Hall and the Hall of Languages.
