Fresh from his debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., award-winning pianist Wei-Yi Yang will present a recital at 8 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Syracuse University's Crouse College. The concert, part of the Setnor Tuesday Concert Series, is free and open to the public.
Yang is chair of the Keyboard Department in SU's Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music, College of Visual and Performing Arts. In his debut at the Kennedy Center on Sept. 21 in the Terrace Theater, Yang will collaborate with cellist Patrick Jee. The concert is sponsored by the Korean Concert Society and is the society's 23rd Annual Washington Debut Recital.
On Oct. 1, Yang will perform an international assembly of 20th century music written by such composers as Maurice Ravel, Luciano Berio, Enrique Granados, Sergey Rachmaninov, Howard Boatwright and Alberto Ginastera.
A pianist from Taiwan, Yang has performed throughout the United States, the British Isles and Asia as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals. He has garnered top prizes and awards in the Manhattan Concerto Competition, New York's FiveTown Arts Foundation Competition, the San Jose International Piano Competition and Yale's Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition, among others. Yang's performances have been featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, on WFMT-Illinois as part of the "Live From Studio One" concert series and on KLRN public television in Texas.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Yang is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Yale University, where he previously earned a M.M.A degree.
