An intricately engraved 18th century wall map of Paris, an installation inspired in part by Midwest farm fields, and a display of camp style furniture-these exhibitions will delight art lovers at Syracuse University's Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery from Sept. 12-Oct. 13. An opening reception will be held Sept. 12 from 3-5 p.m. in the Shaffer Art Building.
"The Environs of Paris: A Bird's Eye View" focuses on the nine-sectioned engraved map of 18th Century Paris and its surrounding countryside, created by the great French cartographer Jean de Lagrive between 1730-46. The map is on loan from The Fletcher Steele Manuscript Collection at the F. Franklin Moon Library at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
"Garden of the Heart" is an installation by Tommy Simpson, an architect, artist, craftsman and designer who creates works based on his memories of Midwest farm fields and visits to Europeans gardens and museums. The installation was originally displayed at The American Craft Museum in New York City, and is supported in part by Leo Kaplan Modern.
"Sit On It: Adirondack and Camp Style Furniture from the Ken, Ida and Kate Manko Collection" allows viewers to relive summer moments as an exhibition of chairs, tables and other seasonal furniture from summer camps and resort hotels found in the Northeast.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Lowe Gallery is open Tuesday and Thursday-Sunday from noon-5 p.m., and Wednesday from noon-8 p.m. The Lowe Gallery is handicapped accessible.
