New support services unveiled by CMS

August 24, 2004

This fall, CMS has opened five new Student Computing Support Centers in convenient locations across campus. Support staff will be available in the new centers from 2-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 2-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday throughout the academic year. The new centers are located in the Brockway, Graham, Kimmel and Lawrinson computer labs on the main campus and in the Goldstein Student Center Computer Lab on South Campus.

In addition to the new centers, CMS has enhanced the availability of online consulting and ResNET troubleshooting services. Both services are free and are available by calling 443-2677 from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

"We want our services to mimic what each of us wants from our home," says June Quackenbush, manager of CMS student services. "I like support on the phone, on the Web or at least very nearby. It was heartbreaking to watch a student carry a desktop computer across campus and into our central location. We modeled our service after the SU Bookstore and its satellite stores."

In addition to being able to visit with a consultant, the Student Computing Support Centers will offer students several new computer repair services. The services include:

  • FreshStart: CMS computer technicians will completely erase the computer's hard drive, reformat it, re-install the operating system with up-to-date patches, and install McAfee antivirus software. Students must back up important data before bringing in their computers. Students must also bring in their operating system CD and Product Key. FreshStart is available for Windows XP and 2000, and for Macintosh OS X. SU laptop computers bought at the Bookstore will be restored to the original image. The FreshStart fee is $25.
  • Microsoft Office File Recovery: Technicians will make an effort to recover Microsoft Office files, although successful recovery of files is not guaranteed. The Microsoft Office File Recovery fee is $25.
  • Microsoft Office Installation: Technicians will install Microsoft Office. To receive this service, students must bring in the original Microsoft Office Suite CD and Product Key. The Microsoft Office Installation fee is $25.
  • IKON Technology Services drop-off: IKON is a privately owned computing services vendor that provides computing repair services beyond that which is available through CMS. Information is available on the Web at http://cms.syr.edu/rescom/ikon.html/.
