Syracuse University has adopted a policy regulating the use of non-motorized wheeled vehicles on campus by students, employees and visitors.
The policy recognizes the value of skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, scooters, bicycles and like devices as a means of convenient and energy-efficient transportation, and allows for their continued use provided that the users follow appropriate precautions to protect the safety of people and property.
Use of such vehicles is prohibited inside University buildings; on loading docks, stairs, banisters, railings, landings, ramps, walls, sculptures, benches and other seating areas; on athletic and recreational playing venues; and anywhere such activities are prohibited by signage.
The policy does not apply to wheelchair users.
The Department of Public Safety is responsible for the policy's enforcement. An SU or SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry student observed violating the policy would receive a documented warning for his or her first violation. In the instance of a repeat violation or property damage, the student would be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs. Faculty and staff violating the rule would be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with University policies.
If an individual is neither an SU/ESF student nor an employee, a documented trespass warning would be issued. The parents of an underage individual would be contacted. A repeat violator would be referred to the Syracuse Police Department.
Restitution may be required for damage caused to University property.
