Graduate student research and design work from the Syracuse University School of Architecture will be featured in a new exhibition at the Urban Center in New York City. Called "IKEAGRAMS," the exhibition will run July 19 - Sept. 15, with an opening reception held July 21, from 7-9 p.m. The opening is free and open to the public.
The exhibition is of design proposals that offer alternatives to a current plan for an IKEA store on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn. The proposals attempt to match the retailer's operational concerns with the community's identity while maintaining public access to the waterfront.
The exhibition is a companion event to the upcoming publication of the work from the IKEAGRAMS studio. Edited by Ben Pell, assistant professor of architecture, and Ted Brown, chair of the School of Architecture graduate department at SU, the publication features student research and design proposals from a studio co-taught by Brown and Pell. It also features critical essays by Pell; Brown; Jonathan Massey, assistant professor of architectural history; and Scott Marble of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation and Planning. The publication will be available in mid-July through Urban Center Books or by contacting SU's School of Architecture.
The Urban Center is part of the Municipal Arts Society of New York, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a more livable city. In conjunction with other organizations such as the Architectural League of New York and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, The Urban Center hosts lectures, exhibitions, and events that support this mission.
