On May 14 and 15, Physical Plant and the Office of Design and Construction will be upgrading the electrical system and the main feed to Machinery Hall. From 4 a.m.-9 a.m. on both days, all computing and network systems housed in Machinery Hall will be unavailable for use by the University community. In addition, the University's voice mail system will be unavailable during the power outages.
Among the computing and network systems affected are: SUMMON, SUMMON2 and SUMMON3 servers; GroupWise and webmail.syr.edu; Orangemail; The Internet via on-campus connections; All www.syr.edu Web sites; First-Step Single Sign-On; PeopleSoft or any other client-server systems; all CMS public computing lab machines; and SU Library services systems accessed both on and off campus.
For information about how individual departmental servers will be affected by the outage, contact local computing support staff.
CMS recommends restarting PCs and all printers each day after the power is restored. For those people who work in buildings that will also be affected by the power outage, CMS recommends that all PCs and printers be turned off each day before leaving work.
CMS has planned carefully for this power outage and has taken precautions that are designed to avoid any computing service disruptions beyond the planned outage window, but there is always a risk that something unforeseen could occur. If users experience any computing and networking problems after 9 a.m., they are advised to check the CMS Alerts Page (http://cms.syr.edu/) for updates. If that is not available, call the Information Center at 443-2677.
This planned power outage is the first of a two-phase process to upgrade electrical services in Machinery Hall. The second phase is expected to be completed in mid-June. The University community will be notified of any possible disruption to computing services during the completion of the second phase.
