The piano faculty in Syracuse University's Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music will perform an unusual repertoire that will feature music written for as many as six hands during an "All Piano Faculty Concert" at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The concert, which is free and open to the public, marks the first in a series of concerts the piano department will present throughout the year.
"Not only is the program unusual, but it is also the first time all the faculty pianists will join forces in performing on the school's recently acquired Steinway concert grand piano," says Wei-Yi Yang, assistant professor of piano and ensemble arts. "The concert will feature music in which three pianists sit at one piano performing at the same time."
In addition to Yang, the faculty performers include Fred Karpoff, Amy Heyman, Ida Trebicka, Michael Salmirs and Steve Rosenfeld. Selections to be performed include "Overture to The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart and Czerny; "Pieces for Three Hands" by Stravinsky; "Petite Suite" by Debussy; "Variations on a Theme of Paganini" by Lutoslawski; "Pieces for Six Hands" by Schnittke and "Frontspice" and "La Valse" by Ravel.
