"Lewis Carroll in Greenwich Village" will be the topic when Morton N. Cohen speaks at the spring luncheon of Syracuse University Library Associates at noon May 11 in Rooms 304B and C of the Schine Student Center.
During his talk, Cohen will discuss his relationship with Carroll's family and his work on Carroll's diaries and letters--particularly how he dealt with the sudden appearance of a huge, newly discovered collection of Carroll's letters just as he was ready to go to press with his two-volume edition of the letters. E.S. Bird Library has a large collection of illustrated Lewis Carroll material, donated by Kathleen Rossman.
Cohen, a former visiting professor at SU, is professor emeritus of English at the City University of New York. He received a bachelor's degree from Tufts University, and master's and doctoral degrees from Columbia University. He has written or edited 14 books, including biographical works on H. Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling and Carroll.
He has held a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, two fellowships from the National Endowmen for the Humanities and two Fulbright Fellowships. In 1996, he was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
