As many off-campus student residents prepare to leave their Syracuse-area neighborhoods at the end of the semester, perfectly good household items are often left behind. The Office of Off-Campus Student Services, working with local agencies around Syracuse, has organized a donation program to benefit community members who could put items like furniture and household appliances to good use.

"We are really excited to launch this program at the end of the semester. Everybody benefits from it-students can be confident their donations are going to be helpful to the local community, and individuals and families will have access to additional household items in good condition that they can use," said Laura M. Madelone, director, Office of Off-Campus Student Services. "The charitable organizations in the Syracuse area, as well as local officials, have been a tremendous help in getting this program off the ground this year. We are very grateful for their assistance"

Representatives from Catholic Charities will be in nearby neighborhoods from noon-3 p.m. on the following dates and locations, specifically seeking furniture, small appliances, silverware, linens, blankets and plates:

• May 5 at the corner of Euclid and Ackerman Avenues;
  
• May 9 at the corner of Harrison and Walnut Streets; and
  
• May 14 at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Westcott Street
  
  

Representatives from the InterReligious Council will be on site from noon-3 p.m. as follows:

• May 5 at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Westcott Street; and
  
• May 12 at the corner of Euclid and Ackerman Avenues
  
  

The Rescue Mission will also pick up used items in good quality condition in the 13210 ZIP code each Friday between 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Residents should call 472-6251 to schedule a pick up.

The Salvation Army and Food Bank of CNY are also accepting non-perishable food donations; Westcott Community Center will accept unused canned goods, household items and arts supplies for its programs.

With the increase in trash during students' moving times, the City of Syracuse is working to expedite trash collection in the area to maintain the cleanliness of neighborhoods to better accommodate residents near the end of the academic year.

Student off-campus residents should ask their landlords where to place unwanted trash and other items before moving out for the summer. Trash should be placed on curbs no earlier than 8 p.m. the night before collection, and trash containers should be removed by 7 p.m. on collection day. Signs are posted on the street indicating the day of collection. Recyclable materials should be placed in the provided blue bins, with cardboard boxes broken down.
