Robert D. Bickel and Peter F. Lake, professors of law at Stetson University, will speak on "Legal Issues in Higher Education" at 3 p.m. April 25 in Maxwell Auditorium. The presentation is part of the SU Division of Student Affairs' Distinguished Lecture Series.
Bickel teaches torts, employment discrimination law and higher education law. He has been the program chair for the National Conference on Law and Higher Education since its inception more than 20 years ago. In 1997, Bickel was one of four recipients of the American Bar Association's Harrison Tweed Award for excellence in the field of continuing legal education. He has lectured at the annual meetings of many national higher education associations. The author of numerous articles, Bickel co-wrote, with Lake, "The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University: Who Assumes the Risks of College Life?" (Carolina Academic Press, 1999).
He is a graduate of the Florida State University College of Law and completed the Harvard University Institute for Education Management program.
Lake teaches torts, insurance and jurisprudence. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a juris doctorate from Harvard University. Prior to joining the Stetson law faculty, Lake was a litigation associate with the firm of Cahill, Gordon & Reindel in New York City. He was also a law clerk for the Hon. Bruce Selya, now a judge for the First Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, and for the Hon. Neil Lynch, associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
