Syracuse University's Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) will present the annual Norma Slepecky Memorial WISE Seminar on Tuesday, April 19, at 4 p.m. in the Kilian Room, Room 500 of the Hall of Languages. The seminar is open to the public; parking is available in paid visitor lots.
The event will begin with the awarding of the Norma Slepecky Prize for Undergraduate Research. The $750 prize was established in memory of Slepecky, a professor of bioengineering and neuroscience in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science and member of the Institute for Sensory Research. Slepecky was a passionate researcher and mentor of undergraduate students seeking research experience.
Following the award presentation, Donna Francher '76, a leader in pharmaceutical research in oncology, will speak on "My Own Science: Scientific Creativity and Entrepreneurship." Francher is the global product director for the global research and development division in oncology for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals in Wilmington, Del., and is very active in issues pertaining to women in science and technology. She received a bachelor's degree in biology from The College of Arts and Sciences in 1976.
