On April 9 from 1-3 p.m., the Skytop Art Workshops for Young People will hold its annual culminating event, "The Big Show." This year's exhibit, "Art Sleuth," showcases the work of approximately 100 workshop participants from Syracuse and surrounding communities who range in age from 5-15. The exhibit will feature a variety of two- and three-dimensional art pieces. It will take place at the Art Education Building, M-17 Skytop, 441 Lambreth Lane. Parking is available in the M-17 lot.
The workshops are planned and taught by Syracuse University undergraduate and graduate art education students as part of the course Methods and Practices of Teaching Art. They are supervised by Hope Irvine, course instructor and director of the department of art education. SU students plan diverse, meaningful and exciting projects for their young pupils. Over the course of the semester, the children attend nine workshops held on Saturdays, in two 75-minute sessions. The sessions include an art lesson and visit to a gallery exhibit created by SU students to further workshop participants' knowledge and exposure to art. "For the 'Big Show,' our SU students work hard to transform our normally tame academic space into a gallery which is worthy of such high-caliber work. This semester's show title was created by the workshop students and is tied into an interactive art sleuth activity that show attendees will take part in," says Irvine.
