Karen Morin, professor of nursing at Western Michigan University, will deliver the annual Judith Anne Evers Memorial Lecture, April 9 at 2 p.m., in the Public Events Room, 220 Eggers Hall. She will speak on "State of the Science: Consequences of Obesity in Pregnancy." The event is hosted by the College of Human Services and Health Professions' School of Nursing. A reception will follow the lecture.
The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in Irving Garage; handicapped parking will be available in the Quad 1 parking lot.
Morin's research focuses on the obstetrical, social, physiologic and economic consequences of obesity during pregnancy. She is the author of more than 100 articles, chapters and abstracts, and the recipient of several professional awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National League for Nursing (2003) and the Excellence in Nursing Education Award from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (1999). She is a member of the board of directors of Sigma Theta Tau International, a nursing honor society.
She previously was on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State University's School of Nursing, where she was interim director of the school and professor-in-charge of the graduate program. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Ottawa, a master's degree from the University of Central Arkansas and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
The Judith Anne Evers Lecture memorializes the professional life of Evers, a
former member of the College of Nursing faculty who earned both bachelor's and master's degrees at SU. Throughout her career, Evers set the highest standards for her own performance and that of the programs and projects she led in the SU community. The lecture series is made possible through the generous support of David Evers, the Evers family, Dorothy McCaffre and other individuals.
