One World Celebration 2001, an event celebrating the diversity of Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and providing educational and fun events in the winter, will be held from Feb. 8 to 17.
The celebration was initiated last year at the suggestion of members of the University's chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the Honor Society for International Scholars. A planning committee, including representatives from administrative offices and student organizations, was formed under the leadership of Phi Beta Delta president Peter Gray and chapter coordinator Michael Smithee.
The celebration will begin with an opening ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Schine Atrium, featuring the Korean drumming group Chun Jee In (Seung-Ho Baek) and the recitation of the One World Declaration statement. One World Celebration 2001 information tables will be on display in the Schine Atrium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Other events scheduled for Feb. 8 include informational meetings on Israel (3 p.m.) and the Hawaii/Japan Gateway Program (4 p.m.) at the Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) office, 119 Euclid Ave.; and a London College of Fashion information meeting, sponsored by DIPA, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 005 of Slocum Hall.

Feb. 9
"Express Yourself Day" will take place in the Nifkin Lounge in Marshall Hall on the ESF campus from 11 a.m to 3:30 p.m. featuring music, food and activities from various cultures.
Feb. 13
A reception for international-sponsored students and scholars will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Public Events Room, Room 220 of Eggers Hall. The reception will be hosted by the Slutzker Center for International Services. Skip Greenblatt, international services advisor at the Slutzker Center, will speak on "Rethinking International Educational Exchange for the 21st Century."
Feb. 14
The Maxwell World Cultures Conference will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the Public Events Room, Room 220 of Eggers Hall. The conference will consist of hourly presentations on international topics and issues. The Global Affairs Institute will sponsor a presentation by Bengt Sundelius, professor of government at Uppsala University in Sweden, and Eric Stern, professor at the National Defence College of Sweden, on "Managing Crises in the European Union" from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Public Events Room. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period and a reception.
Feb. 15
The Maxwell World Cultures Conference will continue from noon to 4 p.m. in the Public Events Room, Room 220 of Eggers Hall. A discussion on Global Nomads International will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Public Events Room. A One World Celebration 2001 reception, sponsored by the planning committee and sponsors, will begin at 5 p.m. in Room 251 of Eggers Hall. A London College of Fashion information meeting will be hosted by DIPA at 5:30 p.m. in Room 005 of Slocum Hall.
Feb. 16
A panel discussion by M.B.A. students on "Promoting Intercultural Communication" will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in Schoepflin Auditorium, Room 010 of the Crouse-Hinds School of Management Building. A concert and party, sponsored by the Caribbean Student Association and AISSU, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium. Tickets will be required.
Feb. 17
A Tribute Dinner, cosponsored by the Caribbean Student Association and AISSU, will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. Tickets will be required.
Offices and organizations involved in the planning and sponsorship of One World Celebration 2001 include Phi Beta Delta, the Slutzker Center for International Services, DIPA (Division of International Programs Abroad), Events Scheduling, Student Activities, Hendricks Chapel, ESF's Office of Multicultural Outreach, the International Relations Program, the Global Affairs Institute the Executive Education Program, the Werner Heumann Institute for Cross-Cultural Understanding in the School of Management, Undergraduate Studies, the English Language Institute, the Center for the Support of Teaching and Learning, AISSU, the Caribbean Student Association, the International Relations Student Association and SU's Global Nomads International.
Funds from a Chancellor's Feinstone Grant for Multicultural Initiatives supported the creation of a One World Celebration 2001 banner for the entrance to the Schine Student Center, a Valentine to the World interactive display in the Schine entrance and various posters and advertisements.
