The Syracuse University College of Law will host an interdisciplinary conference, "Five Perspectives on the New OSHA Ergonomics Standard," from 2:30 to 6 p.m. April 18 in Room 104 of the College of Law.
The conference is directed at practitioners in the legal, medical, labor relations and human resources areas who routinely deal with workplace health issues. The conference speakers will explore the legal, medical and business implications of the new standard. Among the speakers:
? John Tomich, Albany-area director of OSHA, and OSHA associates Gordon Deleys and Ed Jerome, will give an overview of the new standard and discuss enforcement issues from OSHA's perspective.
? Dr. Scott Treatman, medical director of Oneida Silversmiths, will present the corporate medical perspective and will address ergonomics challenges and solutions encountered in the manufacturing setting.
? Dr. Michael Lax and industrial hygenist Greg Siwinski, practitioners in the field of health and safety, will discuss recognizing, treating and preventing work-related musculo-skeletal disorders under the new ergonomics standard from the viewpoint of a community-based occupational health center.
? Dawson Minsch, an officer in the Sheetmetal Workers union, will give the worker perspective and discuss the approaches that the union has taken with respect to ergonomics at Carrier Corp.
? Paul Sansoucy, a labor and employment lawyer at the firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King who specializes in health and safety issues, will discuss some of the legal issues raised by the new standard.
Moderators will be law professor Robert J. Rabin and Dr. James A. Tacci. A question-and-answer session and a reception will follow.
