Noted New York City-based jewelry designer Stephen Dweck will present "Romancing the Stone: Manipulating the Nature" April 3 at 3:30 p.m. in Syracuse University's Sue Ann Genet Auditorium, Room 108 of Slocum Hall. The lecture is presented by the Genet Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.
Dweck searches all over the world looking for stones with the right mixes of color and texture that he transforms into unique designs. His jewelry is powerful, but never overpowering. In his studio, a converted horse stable in Brooklyn, Dweck sits at the rarefied intersection of jewelry design and haute couture. The studio is a metaphor for the body of work he creates-an art form with sensibility that has one foot in the atelier and the other in a remote gem mine in Brazil or New Mexico.
Dewck's jewelry is on permanent display in the costume department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His work includes a range of men's and women's belts, men's jewelry, a home collection and a resin bath and beauty collection. Dweck studied painting and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
The Sue Ann Genet Lecture Series is offered by SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts in conjunction with the Genet Gallery for costume, textiles and decorative arts. The series brings prominent speakers to the University from retailing, fashion and design.
