The Syracuse University Counseling Center and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program are sponsoring an Anxiety Screening Day, March 30, for students, faculty and staff. This free, confidential screening program includes an educational presentation, a written self-test, a private meeting with a mental health professional and a referral if appropriate.

"Dealing with anxiety is one of the leading reasons that students seek support at the Counseling Center. Anxiety Screening Day enables us to reach those students who might not otherwise come to our center," says Tanya Bowen, associate director of the Counseling Center. "For some students, interacting with our staff in the neutral, yet private, setting enables them to have a positive initial contact and often leads to their engaging in ongoing services. Even if small numbers of students take advantage of the screening, we provide an important service to students who are most in need."

According to the Counseling Center, many people experience feelings of panic or fear, or of being keyed up or stressed out, which could signal anxiety disorders. These disorders affect more than 19 million people in the United States each year, but are treatable.

The free clinic, which is open to all Syracuse University students, faculty and staff, will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Rooms 304 A-C of the Schine Student Center. For more information on the clinic, or to learn more about the programs and services available through the Counseling Center, call (315) 443-4715.
