Strategies and practices to help students with disabilities receive a quality higher education will be discussed during a teleconference to be hosted by SU Wednesday, March 26 from 3-5 p.m. The teleconference is being generated by Virginia Commonwealth University and will be down linked by satellite to Newhouse II, room 395. Attendance is free.
Titled "Faculty Discuss Effective Strategies for Teaching Students with Disabilities: What Works in Higher Education," the teleconference is the result of a U.S. Department of Education program which funded 21 faculty development initiatives at colleges and universities across the nation from 1999-2002. The initiatives used a variety of project resources and instructional materials to enhance the success of students with visible and hidden disabilities.
The March 26 teleconference will feature some of the products, methods and resources faculty in the program used to teach students with disabilities. It will also demonstrate the use of accessible technology in the classroom and provide viewers with opportunities to interact with the faculty presenters. Telecast participants will receive a resource book that will summarize the outcomes, training products and developed resources from each of the 21 projects.
The SU presentation of the teleconference is made possible through a donation to the Center on Human Policy by Yvonne Boeger. It sponsored by the center, the Office of Disability Services, the Division of Student Support and Retention, the Disability Studies Program at the School of Education, the Beyond Compliance Coordinating Committee, the Disability Law Society and the Advocacy Board.
