World-renowned musicians The Waverly Consort ensemble will present a concert of Elizabethan music in the March 21 finale of the 2003-04 Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Concert Series at Syracuse University's Hendricks Chapel. The concert begins at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
The concert, "Welcome Sweet Pleasure-An Entertainment for Elizabeth I," will feature vocal and instrumental music by John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Orlando Gibbons and others. Included in the repertoire will be madrigals, spirited court dances, elegant ayres to the lute, anthems, music for royal progresses through the English countryside and the hearty musical evocations of the "cryes" of London's street vendors.
Founded in 1964 by Michael and Kay Jaffee to explore the sounds and styles of early musical repertories, the ensemble has created a worldwide audience for its music through international concerts, recordings and radio and television appearances.
The ensemble's recordings include the best-selling "A Renaissance Christmas Celebration with The Waverly Consort" and "1492: Music from the Age of Discovery," which was created to commemorate the Columbian Quincentenary.
In addition to annual tours of North America, the ensemble has appeared throughout South America, Great Britain, Portugal and Asia. The New York City-based ensemble has performed 100 concerts at Lincoln Center in addition to concert series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and other cultural centers throughout the country.
The Malmgren Concert Series is made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren '42 in 1991. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a vide variety of music.
