Herbert S. Shear, chairman and CEO of GENCO Supply Chain Solutions, is this year's recipient of the Salzberg Medallion presented by the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. Salzberg Medallions are awarded to outstanding practitioners, advocates, academicians or researchers in the field of transportation, distribution and logistics management, and to companies for pioneering ideas and policies that have reshaped the industry.

Those planning to attend should R.S.V.P. to Shannon Hiemstra at (315) 443-3549 or srhiemst@syr.edu. For more information on the event, visit the Salzberg Web site.

Shear is a recognized entrepreneurial industry leader whose innovations in "reverse logistics" have transformed returned merchandise from a cost center to a source of revenue generation and profit for many large manufacturing and retail companies.

In 1971, Shear, the third generation to join the family business, Shear Trucking Co., expanded the company's base of operations to include public warehouse operations. In 1988, Distribution Resources Inc. (DRI) was formed in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Scanning Solutions, Inc., a division dedicated to the development of returns processing software and reclamation center management, was formed in the late 1980s. Applying state-of-the-art bar-code and programming technology, the company offered retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers flexible, centralized returned goods processing and asset recovery services allowing customers to maximize the value of their returned goods.

In 1995, numerous company divisions and services consolidated under one name, GENCO Distribution System, to provide customers with an array of services to store products or materials or move them from one location to another efficiently and cost-effectively. With its transformation to a solutions-based focus, the company is now known as GENCO Supply Chain Solutions. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., GENCO is a recognized leader in supply chain management serving a diverse range of manufacturing and retail customers throughout North America, Australia and the United Kingdom.
