Syracuse University's Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery will present a DVD exhibition, "Life Most Useful: Selections from Spark Video International's Illustrious History," Feb. 26-March 23. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Daniel Fuller, a recent graduate of SU's museum studies program, curates the exhibit.
"Life Most Useful" is a compilation of eight video projects, first presented at Spark Gallery, from artists Jim Finn, Jon Purnell, Ida Akseeon, Jubal Brown, Sophia Yeung, Denis Brun, Graham Hollings and the team of Briit Johnsen and Hanne Nielsen.
"Life Most Useful" is not a "greatest hits" selection from previous years at Spark Video International, but rather a group of works bound by a common thread. Many of the featured artists embrace a critique of cultural power structures and dark political undertones, which is evident in their video programs.
With this exhibit, Spark Video intends to demonstrate its presence in Upstate New York and encourage new admirers of video art to discover one of Syracuse's most vibrant young artistic scenes.
The Lowe Art Gallery will host an opening reception in the Shaffer Art Galleria on Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. The gallery is open Tuesday and Thursday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m., and Wednesday, noon-8 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Mondays and is handicapped accessible. For more information, call (315) 443-3127.
