On Wednesday, Feb. 23, Syracuse University will welcome Robert Godley, operations manager for Constellation Energy's Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, for a lecture titled, "Chernobyl: A Lesson in how NOT to Build a Nuclear Reactor." The lecture, to be held in Room 202 of the Physics Building on the SU campus, will begin at 2:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available in the Comstock, Irving and University Avenue lots.
Godley will discuss how nuclear energy works, detail some mistakes of the past and talk about how scientists have learned to make nuclear energy a safe source of power. He will also discuss some of the social and practical issues surrounding nuclear energy. Questions and discussion from the audience will be encouraged.
At Nine Mile Point, Godley is responsible for the coordination and implementation of safety and reliability programs to ensure smooth station operations. He is a former adjunct professor of business at Valparaiso University's College of Business Administration. Prior to that, he was a project manager for Gilbert Consulting Services, where he developed a corrective action program improvement plan and strategy for Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
Godley received his M.B.A. from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and his BA in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His lecture is sponsored by the SU's Department of Physics.
