Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will be the keynote speaker for Syracuse University's first Student Leadership Empowerment Conference (SLEC), "Leadership Under Construction," March 1 at 1:30 p.m. in the Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium.
"We are really excited to have Ms. Strossen speaking," says Gina Cravedi, keynote speaker chair. "Her reputation strengthens the theme of the conference, and will hopefully attract more student interest." Strossen, the first woman to preside over the ACLU, will speak on "Contemporary Issues, Censorship, and Freedom of Speech."
The conference, sponsored by the Co-Curricular Fee and the Student Activity Fee, is open to the student body. "We're really excited to put on a conference of this magnitude," says Laura Yamin, conference chair. "Leadership is an important quality; it benefits anyone. Hopefully we can help 'construct' strong leaders within the University community." Registrants can choose to attend programming focused on Greek Life, Women in Leadership, Corporate Leadership, Leadership Development and other issues.
