Syracuse University's Black Law Students Association (BLSA), African Student Union, Black Graduate Students Association, African American Studies Department and Africa Initiative will sponsor a screening of the film "Hotel Rwanda," Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. The screening will take place at the Westcott Cinema, 524 Westcott St., Syracuse. A discussion will follow the film. In light of the current ethnic-based killing in Sudan, donations for refugees there will also be collected.
"Hotel Rwanda," nominated for three Academy Awards, is the true story of Rwandan hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (portrayed by actor Don Cheadle), who sheltered more than 1,000 Tutsi refugees from being murdered by the Hutu militia during an attempted genocide 10 years ago. More than 1 million people were murdered in three months during the atrocities.
Tickets for the screening are $6.50 each. BLSA will sell tickets and accept donations at tables set up in SU's College of Law during the week of Feb. 14-18. Tickets can also be purchased at the Westcott Cinema the day of the screening.
