George Bernard Shaw's acclaimed romantic satire, "Arms and the Man," will be the season's fourth production by the Syracuse University Drama Department. Directed by SU drama professor Craig MacDonald, the show will run Feb. 20-29 at Storch Theatre. MacDonald selected this play to provide solid roles for SU's predominantly female drama department.
"Arms and the Man" focuses on the virtue of military valor, using the tale of a young officer and the young woman he encounters during a war in the Balkans to illustrate Shaw's take on the romance of soldierly behavior and common sense ideas about bravery. The play, first performed in 1894, is one of Shaw's earliest and most performed works, and was the basis for the musical "The Chocolate Cream Soldier."
Stars include seniors Kevin Groob and Allison Reed; juniors Cait Doyle, Michael Kevin Girts and Nick Lichtenberg; and sophomores Jonathan Ledoux, Victoria Huston-Elem and Maxymilian Osinski. The set designer is senior Anne "Woodie" Smith, costumes are by senior Emily Dere, senior Matthew Miller is in charge of lighting design and Sarah Pickett serves as sound designer.
