Fernando Diz has been named the Martin J. Whitman Associate Professor of Finance at Syracuse University. The professorship has been established as part of the naming gift made to SU's School of Management by Martin J. and Lois Whitman in June 2003.
Born in Argentina, Diz joined the Whitman School as an assistant professor of finance in 1989, after earning a PhD in agricultural economics from Cornell University. During his tenure at SU, Diz has taught undergraduate, graduate and executive courses in corporate finance, investments, derivatives and distress investing.
His research interests include trading, value and distress investing; market volatility and the use of managed futures; hedge funds; and derivatives securities in investment portfolios. Diz has shared his work in these areas with academic and industry audiences through journals and research conferences, including seminars at the American Stock Exchange, the Managed Funds Association and the Chicago Board of Trade. He has consulted widely in the field of energy trading.
Diz has served as a visiting associate professor of finance in the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. Since spring 2003 he has been the faculty director of SU's Division of International Programs Abroad management internship program in Madrid. In October 2003 he assumed the directorship of the Whitman School's Ballentine Investment Institute. Diz is founder and president of M&E Financial Markets Research, a consulting firm in King Ferry, N.Y.
