The Division of Student Affairs is coordinating community service efforts at the new Vincent House Neighborhood Center, which is opening in March 2005 at its renovated Seymour Avenue location on the southwest side of Syracuse. According to organizers, these efforts will benefit young children and teens from this neighborhood by providing them with a safe and welcoming space for gathering, playing, and learning.
Feb. 18 has been selected as a Day of Service at the Neighborhood Center; volunteers from the University community are being sought for indoor tasks such as cleaning, mural painting and picking up and organizing donated items for the Center. Those offices and individuals who are interested in volunteering their time with hands-on work at the Center on Feb. 18 should contact the Office of Judicial Affairs at 443-3728.
Those who would like to help but cannot be available on Feb. 18 will have other ways to be involved, by donating items including area rugs; children's books and board games; pictures and wall hangings; folding chairs and stools; CDs, DVDs and VHS movies; kitchen dishware, utensils and supplies; and gift certificates from such retailers as Home Depot and WalMart.
Gift certificates should be dropped off at the Office of Judicial Affairs, 310 Steele Hall; drop-off locations for other items include the Office of the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs, 306 Steele Hall; Hendricks Chapel's Noble Room; the information desk at Goldstein Student Center on South Campus; and the 228 suite in the Schine Student Center.
Later this spring, the engagement with Vincent House will continue, with opportunities to help with landscaping and installation of playground equipment. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
