Mitchel B.Wallerstein, dean of Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, has announced three promotions: Michael J. Wasylenko, Timothy M. Smeeding and Gary R. Livent will all assume senior administrative positions in the school.
Wasylenko will become senior associate dean for academic affairs and administration; he will also continue as professor of economics. Since 1997, Wasylenko has served the Maxwell School as associate dean for administration. From 1993-97, he served as chair of the Department of Economics. He specializes in public finance and urban economics issues and he has published extensively on state and local finance, firm location, tax incentives and population decentralization within metropolitan areas. Wasylenko received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from SU.
Smeeding will be appointed to a newly created position, associate dean for sponsored research. Smeeding is currently Maxwell Professor of Public Policy and director of the Center for Policy Research; he will retain those two titles. In addition, Smeeding is the founder and director of the transnational Luxembourg Income Study. He is a recognized expert and has published widely on issues relating to poverty, particularly child poverty; income distribution; and aging. His most recent book is "The Economics of an Aging Society" (Blackwell Publishing, 2004). Smeeding received master's degrees in economics from the Universities of Connecticut and Wisconsin, and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin.
Livent will be appointed to a second newly created position, associate dean for development. Livent has served as Maxwell's senior director of development since 2000. Previously he served for 20 years as vice president for development and community relations at Onondaga Community College. Livent has taught at four colleges and universities, including SU. He received his Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo.
