Hannah Arterian, professor of law and former associate dean of the Arizona State University College of Law, will be the new dean of Syracuse University's College of Law, beginning in the Fall 2002 semester. Current Dean Daan Braveman will return to the College of Law faculty after a yearlong sabbatical.
"I think what drove me to apply was the school's strong reputation," Arterian says. "When I had a chance to spend time getting to know the faculty, I became even more enthusiastic. The law school is well positioned, and I am happy to have the chance to move the school even further forward."
"I'm very enthusiastic about this appointment," says Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah A. Freund. "Hannah brings strong qualities in all the areas necessary to advance the law school. She has a wonderful personality that will fit right into the Syracuse University family."
"Professor Arterian has had a distinguished record as an administrator," SU Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw says. "We are most pleased that she will be with us to lead us at this important time. We are delighted to have her join the SU and legal communities."
Arterian is familiar with New York state, having grown up in Staten Island and earned her bachelor's degree in English, magna cum laude, from Elmira College in 1970. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa there. From 1973 to 1977, she was associated with the New York law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood, one of the most respected law firms in the country.
She earned her doctor of law degree with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1973, where she graduated third in her class. She was the "Note & Comment" editor for the Iowa Law Review and belonged to the Order of the Coif. She won the Hancher-Finkbine Award, an all-university award for achievement. She also won the Murray Award as the outstanding third-year law student.
In addition to Arizona State, Arterian has taught in the law schools of the University of Houston and the University of Iowa. She has published articles in such journals as Industrial Relations Law Journal, Boston College Law Review and Iowa Law Review.
Arterian is a member of the New York State Bar, the Bar of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Bar of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She has been active in the work of the American Association of Law Schools for a number of years, and is a member of the American Bar Association, where she serves on numerous committees. She is the co-chair of the Committee on Professionalism Course for the State Bar of Arizona and a former member of the Gender Bias Task Force of the State Bar of Arizona, among other organizations. She received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from Arizona State University College of Law Alumni Association for 1990-91 and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Maricopa County Bar Association in 1991.
