To celebrate "Year of the American Composer," the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts will present an organ recital by University organist and assistant professor Christopher Marks, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. The concert is in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium located in Crouse College.
Marks will perform on Setnor's historic 1950 Holtkamp organ. The program consists of music by American composers including works by David N. Johnson, Seth Bingham, David Conte, Dudley Buck and the entire "Symphony for Organ" by Leo Sowerby.
Marks teaches organ and music theory at SU and currently serves as sub-dean of the Syracuse Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. At SU, he also accompanies the Hendricks Chapel Choir, performs during worship services and runs the Malmgren Concert Series, which focuses on the organ and has recently begun to commission new music.
He holds degrees from the University of Richmond, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he studied under Michael Farris. His performances have garnered top prizes in competitions including the Arthur Poister Competition, the San Marino Competition, the Fort Wayne Competition and the Mader Competition.
The recital is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Irving Garage.
