The Royal Syracuse Shakespeare Company, a student-run production company affiliated with Syracuse University's Department of Drama, will present "Comedy of Errors" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8-11 in The Underground of the Schine Student Center. Tickets are $3 and can be obtained by calling the Schine Box Office at 443-4517.
Directed by Michael Weiselberg, a senior drama major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, "Comedy of Errors" is the story of twin boys separated at birth whose paths cross later in life, creating confusion among the residents of a town called Epidaurus.
The Royal Syracuse Shakespeare Company was organized last fall by a group of eight drama majors who are dedicated to bringing the magic of Shakespeare to the masses. "Comedy of Errors" is their first production. "Most people have less-than-fond memories of their experience with Shakespeare in high school," says Jeffrey Stevens, a sophomore musical theater major and co-president of the company. "We want to change all of that. Our vision is to get Shakespeare out there in any way possible and to make it more enjoyable for the community."
The group has reached out to local high schools, inviting their students to the performances of "Comedy of Errors." Groups of students from two area high schools are expected to attend the Feb. 9 performance. The troupe is hoping to be invited to perform in local high schools, and they also plan to stage impromptu, mini performances of the Bard's work on the Quad, in the Schine Student Center, at Thornden Park and at Carousel Center.
Although the troupe is affiliated with the Drama Department, anyone in the University community is welcome to join. For more information about the troupe, call Stevens at 443-6578 or e-mail jeff199@thespark.com.
