The exhibition "Illustrating Our World: The Work of Yvonne Buchanan"
will be on display at the Community Folk Art Center, 2223 East Genesee St., from Jan. 29-Feb. 26. An opening reception will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, from 2-4 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Buchanan, an assistant professor of illustration at SU, is an award-winning illustrator whose political editorial work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Newsday, The Washington Post and The Nation. She has also illustrated several children's books. She graduated from the High School of Art and Design in New York City and from Parsons School of Design with a B.F.A. in illustration.
As a companion to the exhibition, Buchanan will present the "Umbilica Project" at the Community Folk Art Center on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. "Umbilica Project" consists of the films "Adrift," "Rapture," "Trip" and "Sub Merge," which concern the impact of a mother's death on the artist and her siblings. Though strongly narrative, the work is visually experimental and abstract. There will be a discussion of the films after the screening, for which admission is free.
Buchanan will also conduct an artist's workshop on creating a children's book at the Community Folk Art Center, Feb. 12 from noon-3 p.m. The workshop will be open to children and adults, and family groups are encouraged to attend.
