Depression intervention to be topic of conference

"Depression-On the Rise? Intervention Strategies" is the name of the Counseling Update 2004 conference being sponsored by the Study Council at Syracuse University and SU's School of Education, Jan. 30 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The session will be held at Drumlins Country Club.

Counseling Update is an annual conference attended by members of more than 50 school districts. Co-sponsors include Central New York Counselors, SU's School of Social Work, the New York Counseling Association and the New York State School Counseling Association.

The keynote speaker will be Mary A. Connery, director of staff development for the Fairport Central Schools. Her topic will be "Caution - Counselors at Work: Maintaining Balance and Joy." Other presentation topics will include "Grief and Depression in Children," "Building Resiliency to Help Prevent and Treat Depressed Teens," "When the Child in My Office is a Child with Asperger Syndrome," "Depression Intervention: A Discussion," "Self-Injury-Sacrificing Part of the Body for the Sake of the Whole" and "Professional Job Stress: Applying What We Know About Burnout to School Counselor Practice."

The planning committee for the conference includes: Chair Katie Bombard from the Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District; Joan Cawley from Cicero-North Syracuse Central School District; Deborah J. Howe-Tennant from Ithaca Central School District; Janna Scarborough, assistant professor of counseling and human services at the School of Education; Sandy Trento, director of professional and organizational relations in the Professional Development Office in the School of Education; Sharon View from Liverpool Central School District; and Wil Whittico from Cicero-North Syracuse.

Faculty members from the School of Education who are participating in the conference include: Nan S. Songer, director of the Early Childhood Direction Center; and Counseling and Human Services' Adele Baruch-Runyon, instructor, Janna Scarborough, assistant professor, and Kevin Wilkersin, instructor.
