Organist Yoon-Mi Lim will inaugurate a new tradition of "Rising Stars" concerts as part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Syracuse University's Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.
Lim will perform works by Bach, Buxtehude, Du Mage, Guillou and Widor during the concert, which is free and open to the public.
A native of Seoul, South Korea, Lim is a doctoral student at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she is studying organ performance and literature with Chris Young. She received her bachelor and master of music degrees from Yonsei University, in Seoul, with emphasis on organ performance and church music. While studying at Yonsei, she also pursued her study in piano and won the first prize in Korean Piano Duo Competition.
Lim won the first prize in the John Rodland Scholarship Competition 2003 in Ridgewood, N.J., and was invited as a guest organist at the Hymn Festival. She currently is the organist at Fairview United Methodist Church in Bloomington and a faculty member in the Young Pianist Program at Indiana University.
The annual 'Rising Stars' concerts will feature young organists whose careers are on the rise. Lim recently won second prize in the Arthur Poister Competition for Organ Playing, an internationally recognized competition that takes place in Syracuse.
The Malmgren Concert Series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren '42 in 1991. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a vide variety of music.
