The 1992 hit movie "Sneakers" is the next installment in the continuing Fall 2002 Film Festival sponsored by Syracuse University's School of Information Studies. The film will be shown at 7 p.m., Nov. 7 in SU's Kittredge Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall. A discussion will follow. The film festival is free and open to the public.
Directed by Phil Alden Robinson and starring Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, River Phoenix and James Earl Jones, the high-tech thriller features two politically minded whiz kids who pull off a daring computer caper during the 1960s, but only one gets caught. Twenty years later, the lucky half of the daring duo is the leader of an oddball group of computer hackers who test security systems for big companies. When agents from the National Security Agency catch up with him, he agrees to participate in a top-secret mission to recapture an invaluable decoding device, which gives the user the ability to access and alter information in the cyberspace galaxy, manipulate economies of entire countries and bring about global disaster by erasing all records of personal property.
The School of Information Studies film festival is designed to stimulate thought and discussion about the role of information in society through the medium of film. Faculty members and doctoral students from the school will facilitate discussions immediately following the viewings.
