Syracuse University's Brazilian Ensemble will present the next Setnor Tuesday Concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Joshua Dekaney, who is also the lead drummer, the ensemble will perform a variety of Brazilian music styles, including bossa nova, samba-reggae, samba and folk songs. The concert will feature classical guitarist Ken Meyer, who will perform works by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Formed a year ago, the Brazilian Ensemble is composed of SU students who learn to play traditional instruments and perform the unique and lively music drawn from the Brazilian Escola de Samba (samba school) tradition, which originated during the 1920s. Dekaney holds a master's degree in music performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He has taught steel drums and Brazilian music at Florida State University, and performs exclusively on Paiste cymbals, sounds and percussion.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Meyer has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Italy and Venezuela. He has appeared with the Brampton Symphony and Toronto Philharmonic, and has been featured at the Rome Festival, the Eastman SummerFest and the Alirio Diaz Guitar Festival and Competition in South America. Meyer is an instructor of guitar studies in SU's Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music, College of Visual and Performing Arts.
