Syracuse University's Division of Student Affairs, Safety Office and Department of Public Safety are working together to promote safety during the month of November. The "Are You Watching?" campaign is designed to raise awareness within the SU community about personal safety, fire safety, pedestrian safety and traffic safety.
The kick-off event for Safety Month will be a Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 1 on the Quad. The rain date for the fair is Nov. 7. Displays and information that will be available include blood pressure screenings, a seat belt simulator, fingerprinting and recruitment information for people who are interested in careers in law enforcement.
Participating departments and agencies include the American Red Cross, Syracuse University Ambulance, Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff's Department, Rural Metro, SU's Department of Public Safety, SU Health Center, the Syracuse Fire Department, the Onondaga County Disaster Team, the SU Judicial Board and SU's Center for Career Services.
Other activities during the month include:
? Safety information will be distributed on Nov. 8 to students living off campus.
? A fire prevention demonstration for families living in Slocum Heights will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Slocum Heights Community Room.
? A defensive driving course will be offered by the Safety Office Nov. 13, 14 and 17. The course is free for students with a valid SU I.D. Registration information will be available at the Safety Fair.
? A CPR course will be offered to students by Rural Metro from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 15 at a location to be determined. Those interested may sign up at the Safety Fair.
? Finger printing and bike registration will be offered to families living in Slocum Heights from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Slocum Heights Community Room.
? Information about pedestrian safety awareness will be available at the parking booths on campus all day Nov. 16.
? A first aid course will be offered to students by Rural Metro from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17. Registration information will be available at the Safety Fair.
A specific program has been designed for residence hall students to alert them to the potential for theft when they leave their dorm room doors unlocked. Resident advisors and area advisors will use the program to educate residents about the importance of personal safety. Resident advisors and area advisors will check to see if room doors are locked during the evening hours.
Other informational activities include the distribution of door hangers with fire information in residence halls, bulletin board displays about fire and personal safety, and a safety newsletter to be distributed to all off-campus students. In addition, fire drills will be held in campus buildings.
Traffic and pedestrian safety will also be addressed during Safety Month through such activities as on-campus radar speed checks. Additionally, parking booth attendants will distribute information about pedestrian safety.
