Internationally renowned flutist, teacher and recording artist Jeanne Baxtresser will present a masterclass, interactive workshop and recital at Syracuse University on Nov. 3 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College.
The masterclass (with eight pre-selected performers) and interactive workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is open to auditors, who are encouraged to bring their flutes. The recital will be held at 4 p.m. and is open to the public. The fee for the masterclass and interactive workshop is $15, which includes the afternoon recital. Tickets for the recital only are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and children ages six to 12, and are available at the door.
During the interactive workshop, Baxtresser will present "Using Your Practice Time Effectively," "Establishing a Creative Attitude" and "Her Favorite Exercises for Tone and Vibrato with Audience Participation."
The recital will include a performance by Baxtresser, who will play duets with Syracuse Symphony Orchestra principal flutist Deborah Coble; a solo performance by Coble, and performances by Cynthia Decker, SSO second flutist; Linda Greene, SSO acting piccolo player; Dana DiGennaro, vice president of the Central New York Flute Association; Sara Greene, president of the Central New York Flute Association; and Selma Moore, flute professor at Onondaga Community College. The flutists will be accompanied by pianist Mark Smith.
Baxtresser has held principle positions with three major orchestras, culminating with a 15-year tenure as solo flutist with the New York Philharmonic. She is currently a member of the faculties of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
Her recorded works include the music of Debussy, Gaubert, Martin, Franck, Schubert, Saint Seans and Godard. Her first album, "Jeanne Baxtresser Solo Debut," is being re-issued this season. Her published work includes "Orchestra Excerpts for Flute with Piano Accompaniment" and her latest "The Greatest Flute Duos from the Orchestral Literature."
Baxtresser has taught across the United States, Europe and Asia, and has served on the faculties of the Julliard School and the Manhattan School of Music.
