Center for Career Services holds Nov. 1 Open House to showcase renovations, launch Career Awareness Month

Syracuse University's Center for Career Services invites students, faculty and staff to visit its offices at 235 Schine Student Center on Nov. 1 from 2-5 p.m. to view its newly renovated facilities that opened at the beginning of the Fall 2002 semester. The Open House will launch Career Awareness Month and showcase the center's enhanced programming and services, along with its student-centered research and interviewing areas.

"We hope the campus community will take a few minutes to see the newly expanded facilities of the Center for Career Services and learn more about the programming available for our students," says Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs. "These facilities leverage the latest in computer technology to assist students in exploring their career options through the professional assistance and tools available to them at the Center for Career Services."

The Office of Design and Construction was instrumental in creating a project design that included a welcoming work area. In addition to an expanded reception area and "resource wall" that features career-related information, the facilities integrate new computer workstations, bringing the total to eight computers available to students to research employers and careers, develop resumes, write cover letters, and complete on-line career assessments.

A series of state-of-the-art professional interviewing/conference rooms are now available for on-campus interviews as well as mock interviews, featuring computer ports and television monitors. The addition of an employer lounge offers visiting recruiters a satellite "home office" set-up that includes everything needed to do business from the road, from Internet access to telephones and workspace.

"Our new facilities allow us to do so much more for our students. We have received a great amount of positive feedback about the recent changes, both from students and employers," says Michael T. Cahill, director of the Center for Career Services. "While the renovations are complete, we are just at the beginning of maximizing the new space and discovering all the advantages that it will provide."

In addition to the November Open House, other events planned for Career Awareness Month include:


  • As part of the Student Affairs Programming Council's "Wellness Wednesday" events, the Center for Career Services will sponsor "Your Career is More than a Job" in the Schine Atrium on Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • A series of three programs targeted to sophomores, including: "Resumes for Sophomores;" "Making Course Selections With Your Career in Mind," and; "Pursuing Career-Related Experiences On Campus," will be featured during the week of Nov. 11 to 15.

  • During the week of Nov. 18-22, two workshops focused on seniors planning to apply to graduate school will be held. Also, on Nov. 21-22, workshops to assist students to launch an internship search will be conducted.

The Center for Career Services, a principal unit within the Division of Student Affairs, provides services, resources, and programs that help and motivate individuals to identify and pursue career goals. At its foundation, the Center strives to teach students how to navigate the numerous career transitions they will face during their lifetime.
