"Music is Music!" a concert featuring multi-instrumentalist Hankus Netsky, violinist Diane Monroe, recorder virtuoso Joel Levine, cellist Daniel Levin, and vocalist Rebecca Rubin, will be held at 8 p.m. Feb. 3 in Setnor Auditorium, located in Crouse College. Sponsored by the Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the program will range from jazz and blues to klezmer and contemporary classical music.
Netsky is an instructor in contemporary improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and director of the internationally acclaimed Klezmer Conservatory Band, a group specializing in Yiddish vocal and instrumental music. Monroe has toured extensively both as a solo artist and as a member of the Uptown String Quartet and the New York String Trio.
Levine has received great acclaim both for his pioneering jazz recorder work and his interpretations of baroque repertoire in the U.S. and Europe. Rubin, a student at Tufts University and the New England Conservatory of Music, and music director of the Tufts "Amalgamates" acapella group, was recently awarded first prize as soloist in the national collegiate acapella competition. Levin, director of the music program at the Discovery Charter School in Newark N.J., performs regularly with the Speakeasy String Quartet, a group specializing in popular repertoire of the 1920s and 1930s, and in a free improvisation ensemble with Joseph Gabriel Maneri.
Netsky and Monroe will also present master classes in improvisation at SU on Feb. 4
