Internationally acclaimed klezmer musician Joel Rubin will present "Beyond Bagels and Klezmer: Reflection on the Klezmer Movement" at 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in Syracuse University's Hall of Languages, Room 107. The presentation is sponsored by the Judaic Studies program in The College of Arts and Sciences and is free and open to the public.
An ethnomusicologist and clarinetist, Rubin earned a Ph.D. in 2001 from City University of London. He has performed internationally since 1981 and has led the Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble since 1994. His recent CD, "Beregovskis Khasene (Beregovskis Wedding): Forgotten Instrumental Treasures from the Ukraine," was the first recording devoted exclusively to music collected by Russian-Jewish folklorist Moyshe Beregovski during the years 1911 to 1948. Syracuse University Press has since published two volumes of translations of Beregovski's research.
Rubin is the co-author of "Klezmer-Musik" (Baerenreiter/dtv, 1999) and "Juedische Musiktraditionen" (Jewish Musical Traditions, Bosse, 2001) and the author of "Mazltov! Jewish-American Wedding Music for Clarinet" (Schott, 1998). He is the co-editor of the ongoing Jewish Music Series of CDs for Schott's Wergo label and of the CD klezmer trilogy for Trikont Publishers. An award-winning documentary, "A Tickle in the Heart," was based on his original research with the Epstein Brothers, recipients of the 1998 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Education Association.
