The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently presented Syracuse University's School of Education Dean Douglas Biklen with the 2011 UNESCO/Emir Jaber al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah Prize, honoring him for his work promoting quality education and equal opportunity for persons with educational disabilities.
SU students interested in the Middle East have a number of student abroad programs to choose from, including the Muslim cultures program at SU London and exchange programs at Bogazici Univeristy in Istanbul, Turkey and the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Read more

Over the course of just two months, Sherlyn Sychua, regional manager for advancement and external affairs/ admissions, covered thousands of miles from Dubai to Istanbul visiting high schools and attending education fairs to share the Syracuse University experience with prospective students in the Middle East and Turkey. Sherlyn’s trek began in Kuwait City, Kuwait, where she stopped to meet with students at the American School of Kuwait, Al Bayan High School and American International School of Kuwait.
Each summer, six undergraduate civil engineering majors at SU's L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science become immersed in the operations of the internationally known Dubai Contracting Company (DCC) in the United Arab Emirates. This unique program was established in 2008 by L.C. Smith alumnus and head of DCC, Abdallah Yabroudi, '78, G'79.

"I have been astounded by what is available here; the American hospitality has far exceeded my expectations." Jordanian reporter Asharf Al-Raie and seven other international journalists visited Syracuse University as part of a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Their visit coincided with the U.S. elections, as they observed firsthand democracy in action and how a free press covers that process.

Syracuse University and the Near East Foundation (NEF) have formed an unprecendented affiliation that brings together SU’s rich mix of academic programs, institutes and other resources with NEF’s 95 years of experience in social and economic development to find creative solutions to the challenges of vulnerable communities in the Middle East and Africa. Syracuse University has further strengthened its presence in the Middle East with the creation of its first international regional council. The Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) Regional Council will focus on elevating the university’s profile, while selectively building relationships in these key geographic areas. SU Provost and Vice Chancellor Eric Spina presided over the council’s inaugural meeting, which was held in Dubai.
A new regional manager in Dubai is the latest investment by Syracuse University to further build on its established presence in the Gulf. Sherlyn Sychua has been appointed the regional manager for advancement and external affairs/admissions. Sychua¿s responsibilities include undergraduate recruitment and admissions, as well as efforts to develop and maintain relationships with SU alumni and institutions in the Gulf states.
