The Joint Board of Trustees/SU Working Group on Policies Related to Sexual Conduct, Campus Culture, and Safety was formed in December 2011 to review University policies related to conduct, and responses to allegations of misconduct, for the campus, including the Department of Athletics. The goal is to ensure that policies are in place that sustain and advance the University’s commitment to an open, safe, and welcoming campus.
The Working Group is charged with reviewing policies, identifying gaps, and recommending areas for improvement with respect to their current effectiveness in creating a culture that is in alignment with the University’s academic mission and is consistent with the University values of transparency and sound governance. Specifically, the Working Group is charged:
To examine Athletic Department policies regarding conduct of student-athletes and departmental staff;
To examine SU policies regarding student conduct;
To examine SU policies regarding staff conduct;
To examine SU policies regarding faculty conduct; and
To examine SU policies regarding conduct and the safety of community members, guests, and participants in University activities.
The Working Group will avail itself of consultants on athletic policy, sexual abuse, legal requirements or any other areas in order to complete its work and will review best practices before making its recommendations for the campus. The Working Group will consist of three (3) Trustees, appointed by the Chair of the Board and four (4) members of the University, appointed by the Chancellor, in consultation with the Athletic Director. The Working Group will report to the Board Chair, the Chancellor, and the Athletic Director when requested.
The Board Chair and the Chancellor will report to the Board. The Chancellor will be responsible for making the recommendations of the Working Group available to the Athletic Director, other members of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the University Senate, and the broader University community.
