Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship Programs

Veterans

At Syracuse, we take our Veterans seriously and are very appreciative of their sacrifice and service.  We want to make your transition to Syracuse University as smooth as possible.   The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs coordinates all federal, state, and institutional financial aid together with information we receive from the Veteran’s Administration regarding GI benefit funding eligibility.

When you file your financial aid applications, (Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE),—before you know your GI benefits—you will receive an initial financial aid award letter based on no eligibility for VA funding.

If we are later notified by the VA that you will be receiving Veteran’s benefits, we will recalculate your financial aid awards and include your GI benefits.  Veteran’s benefits do not affect federal financial aid, but may change state and Syracuse University grant and scholarship aid, as well as private/alternative loans, as we must include in your eligibility for these funds your Veteran’s benefits.  If your financial aid eligibility changes, we will send you a new award letter indicating the new eligibility for state and Syracuse University grant aid.

Federal regulations indicate that tuition based awards (e.g.  Syracuse University merit scholarships, some state awards and some Veteran’s Benefits) cannot exceed the cost of tuition for the academic year.

If you are a Syracuse University merit scholarship recipient, this scholarship may be combined with other tuition based awards, such as your Veteran’s Benefits or state grants, but cannot exceed the cost of tuition for the academic year.  In addition, if you are receiving any Syracuse University need-based grant or scholarship, your total financial aid award cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance.

We recommend contacting the Veterans’ Resource Center at Syracuse University, located at 700 University Avenue.  They can be reached at 315-443-3261 or via email at veterans@syr.edu.
