Student Spotlight

Jonathan Chan, Marketing and advertising, class of 2011, San Francisco, CA

jonathanchan1.jpgMy SU experience has been very enriching. I have been able to take on a great academic program as dually enrolled student in the Whitman School of Management and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. In addition to my academic program, I am currently involved with ASIA (Asian Students in America), A-Line (the University’s Asian-interest publication), the Whitman Consulting Club, and The NewHouse (student run advertising agency). I'm also an ambassador for both Whitman and Newhouse. One of my proudest accomplishments is being able to become a dually enrolled student in Whitman and Newhouse. It proved that I was academically and emotionally ready to take on the challenge of the programs. I'm also proud of being elected as a fundraiser for ASIA. I felt it proved I was on my way to reaching my fullest potential in an organization that reflects my cultural roots. I am excited by finding more ways to be connected to the university. I am very fortunate to have many opportunities to talk with and relate to faculty, whether focused on academic and career topics, or just having casual talks on campus.

Why did you choose SU?
Being from San Francisco, I was seeking a chance to become more independent while studying in some of the top academic programs in the nation. Syracuse is definitely not like San Francisco. Professionals in business and media need to be able to quickly adapt to new settings. I saw college as an opportunity to try a new setting and develop those skills.

What has been your most meaningful experience so far?
Being the fundraiser of the executive board of ASIA last fall semester was a very meaningful experience. It tested my abilities in many areas. I was planning events, running meetings, and communicating with ASIA members on a regular basis. It helped me become confident in both professional and social settings. The whole experience taught me to discipline myself even more.

What's the secret of your success at SU?

Disciplined time management and realistic goal-setting. Never underestimate the power of those two skills. Taking that extra minute in putting your daily routine in a Google Calendar or planner can help a lot. In addition, every student has his or her aspirations. Sometimes, it is really good to write down your goals so you can stay focused on achieving them.

How have you changed since you've been here?
I am becoming much more stable and confident. I can proudly say that I am responsible for my own actions. I have definitely grown up and become much more humble.

What do you plan do after you graduate?
In my application essay, I said that I wanted to launch a career focusing on China and America. I still intend to find a way to do that. I have taken on an internship at an ad agency focused on Asian-American markets, added a Chinese Studies minor to my academic program, and am currently studying abroad in Hong Kong. I would like to earn a master’s degree, which would further enable me to focus on this career path. I am not looking for a specific employer, but I want to make sure I find one shares my values. I'd like help to advance company and continue on the path to reaching my personal and professional interests.
